There is a MATE remix available for the Ubuntu distribution named Mateu. This is a remix of Ubuntu created by Gil Nóbrega that includes the MATE desktop by default. This is a worthy answer to the domination of the Linux Mint 14 MATE distribution and a good alternative to the Ubuntu Unity desktop that is annoying and ugly compared to the elegant Gnome 2.32.2 desktop that was available for Ubuntu 10.10. This distribution is based on Ubuntu 12.10 with 32bit and 64bit versions available as a live ISO image that is easy to load and use. The MATE desktop can use some very lovely themes and it is very popular; so a Linux distribution that uses this desktop interface will also be very popular. So if you want a nice and fast desktop Linux distribution that will give you a traditional Linux desktop then give this a go. You will not be disappointed. The MATE desktop is the reason that the Linux Mint 14 distribution is so popular. It is first in the page rankings listing on the Distrowatch website and this is due to the care and attention lavished on this Linux distribution. Ubuntu is lagging behind in third place; but if this MATE alternative respin takes off then the ranking could climb a little higher.
