Seagate company have shipped a new 8 terabyte hard disk drive; this offers a lot of storage space for the price. The price is not available, but the TCO is claimed to be the lowest of any hard disk drive on the market. I am waiting to find out how large hard disk drives really can get, is 8 terabytes the largest drive we will see or will we need to add more platters to store more data. The only problem is that if this drive fails, you will lose even more data. But the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of the ability to store this much data. The new hard drive is in the new 3.5 inch form factor and uses a high speed SATA 6Gbps interface and multi-drive RV tolerance which makes it suitable for data centers.
