To watch a Vimeo in VLC, we need to capture the actual video URL. Firstly, copy the video URL from the address bar.

Then paste this into the Open Network Stream option.
After a short wait the video will open in VLC. This is how easy it is to play Vimeo without leaving a browser open. A very nice trick indeed.
Another way is to use the cvlc command-line version and watch a video with it.

This works very well with VLC 3.0.3 on Ubuntu 18. This is a very nice way to watch your favorite movies without having to use Firefox.
You may also watch Vimeo with MPV. Just use it like this to watch an online video.

This is a nice fast way to watch an online video. It is also possible with MPV to use an addon script and rip a webm of part of the video, this is another very good use of this player.
