Dosbox fun and Linux PDFS.

I have tried out the old Doom.exe in Dosbox and I had to patch the Doom.exe to the Ultimate Doom version to be able to get access to all the episodes and I copied the Doom2.exe v1.9 to the folder with the other files and then after getting help in this thread, I was able to use the patch and upgrade the Doom2.exe to the Ultimate Doom code and then run it and see the changes. Older games like this are very interesting, seeing the way that you could mix and match game executables between game versions like this and have them still work. Dosbox is a very good DOS emulator that allows computer users to run very old DOS applications on modern computers easily. You could also use QEMU and a disk image of DOS I would assume, but Dosbox is easier indeed. Shown below is my /etc/group file. I have added my username homer to the video group, which allows me to play videos on the text console, this works without any problems in Linux Mint 11.

The /etc/group file is a good way to control what your users have access to on the Linux/UNIX system. As you can see, the timidity MIDI player package is installed and has added the timidty user to the audio group allowing it to get access to the audio playback hardware.

Some Linux tutorial PDFs. I uploaded this series of Linux tutorial PDFs a while ago and I thought I would link to them again, as they are very good at teaching the use and inner workings of the Linux operating system.

What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
