I have had problems with the Ubuntu 12.04 desktop when I was using it where the Unity desktop would not shut down properly. The only solution I could find was to press Ctrl->Alt->F2 and type sudo init 0 at a bash prompt and the system will shut down. Hopefully this will be fixed in the final release, but it is not a good look when you can not even shut down the desktop properly.
