The new Ubuntu 14.04 Unity desktop has some cool features. The icons on the sidebar launcher may be re-sized to 16 pixels in size. This allows the launcher bar to take up even less space. And the new 3.13 kernel includes many enhancements over the old 3.12 release. Firefox 25.0 is the standard browser for the 14.04 release. The installer is very good, I chose to install next to Windows 7 and resizing the Windows partition to install Ubuntu was very simple. This is actually a good release of Ubuntu. After the immense dissapointment of the 13.10 release, this is actually a good return to form for Canonical. This is a good thing. Ubuntu is advertised all over the place and it should be able to back up the hype.
A new feature in the new Unity desktop is the ability to have the window menu in the title bar instead of the top bar. This is not as good as the Mac OS styled top bar menu. I prefer that as it is in a consistent location. if you type sudo apt-get install synaptic
you can install the Synaptic package manager and find software more easily. Below, you can see what the new Nautilus file manager looks like. This is quite different to the old Gnome 2.32 file manager, but still very useful. So Ubuntu is a worthwhile desktop choice again.
