Installing Hesk on a Debian Linux server is very easy. This allows you to deploy a simple Linux powered web helpdesk.

Download the Hesk software here:

I downloaded and unpacked the Hesk software tarball and extracted it to the var/www directory.

sudo unzip -d /var/www

This was then set to the proper permissions using this command. This is to ensure the PHP files will work correctly with the Apache web server, as it is quite picky with file permissions sometimes.

sudo find . type f exec chmod 644 {} \; && find . type d exec chmod 755 {} \;

Then I had to load MySQL and create the database for Hesk. This is the fun part.

create database hesk_db;

And then add a user to access the database.

CREATE USER 'heskadmin'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'Password1';

And we need to grant the user the privileges to access MySQL.

grant usage on *.* to [email protected] identified by "Password1";

And then give them the privileges needed to access the actual database used by Hesk.

grant all privileges on hesk_db to [email protected]

Then you may access the installation by visiting the link and following the instructions there.

Make sure the following files/folders are writable by PHP: file on Unix (Linux) servers CHMOD this file to 666 (rwrwrw) directory attachments on Unix (Linux) servers CHMOD this directory to 777 (rwxrwxrwx)

sudo chmod 666 && sudo chmod 777 attachments/

This will perform both tasks at once. The installation script will run some checks to verify that you have the right dependencies installed to run Hesk. Enter the database name as well as the username and password of the database user you created earlier with MySQL. Then the setup script for Hesk will create all of the necessary tables in the database. Once this has completed; the Hesk software is ready for use. On the Hesk configuration page; fill out the fields with the URL of the Hesk server and the database name as well as the username and password of the database user. Also type a name for the Helpdesk. This is what the user will see in their titlebar when they visit the web page. Then click the Test MySQL connection button to test the database connection. If the connection is working; click the Save changes button to save the changes to the configuration.

Your syntax is absolutely HORRIBLE. Clean it up and look like you know what you’re talking about!
