How to get me-tv working on Linux Mint 13 Maya. Compiling from source with an older version.

Me-tv running on Linux Mint 13 Maya.
Me-tv running on Linux Mint 13 Maya. This is version 1.3.7.

The me-tv software for Linux Mint 13 Maya was not working for me, but I found out that if you download this tarball: https://launchpad.net/debian/+archive/primary/+files/me-tv_1.3.7.orig.tar.gz and install it by running the commands below.

./autogen.sh
make
make install

Then the software will work. The new version 2.00 release is broken, the client-server model does not work at all. The developers really should have left the software as it was, it worked perfectly. That is the problem with the Linux distributions, they are pushing out new versions of application packages all of the time and they are not checking if they are actually working properly before they bundle up the software in a package and release it. I had some problems with the interface when running this with the KDE 4.8.3 desktop, but it works fine with MATE. You could try and install the Debian package for this application in Linux Mint, but that would be fraught with difficulty, installing from source worked perfectly for me, so that is how I fixed this problem. In Linux Mint 14, this software works perfectly without having to go through this procedure. But this did work for me on Linux Mint 13.

  1. To my regret that recipe does not work! May be that works in very special settings or mint development branches? Please, rethink your recipe or delete it! Wasted time!

BTW Kaffeine does not work either! it scans channels, but if you try to open a channel you get the message: Cannot find input plugin for MRL “fifo:/home/ub/.kde/share/apps/kaffeine/dvbpipe.m2t”.

    • It did work when I tried it. But if you update to Linux Mint 14, and install me-tv with sudo apt-get install me-tv the package works perfectly. So that is a good incentive to install the newer release and enjoy the newer software.
