>Assemble a part list
>Example gaming builds and _monitor_ suggestions; click on the blue title to see notes
>Learn how to build a PC (You can find a lot more detailed videos on channels like Bitwit)
>How to install Win7 on Ryzen

If you want help:
>State the budget & CURRENCY for your build
>List your uses, e.g. Gaming, Video Editing, VM Work
>For monitors, include purpose (e.g., photoediting, gaming) and graphics card pairing (if applicable)

>G4560/G4600 for non-gaming (light tasks) or bare minimum gaming builds with a dedicated graphics card
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (best with OC + fast RAM)
>R5 1600 / i5 8400 - Great gaming or multithreaded use CPUs
>R7 / Used Xeon / Threadripper / i7 - Heavy Multi-Tasking / VM Work / Mixed use

>Current CPUs benefit from high speed RAM; 3000-3200 MHz is ideal
>Before buying RAM for Ryzen, check your Mobo's QVL or look for user reports

Graphics cards:
>Consider Vega 56 for a Freesync monitor
>Crypto-Currency miners have driven GPU prices up (particularly Radeon)
>GTX 1050Ti and 3GB 1060 are the only reasonably priced cards; 6GB 1060 or 4GB 580 if you want to overpay a little
>GTX 1070 if you're looking for very high (100+) framerates and you have a CPU and monitor to match
>GTX 1070/Ti and 1080 are standard choices; currently overpriced

GNU is making their own distribution!
It's still in beta, but here's its features
Linux-libre kernel
Uses their own Guix package manager
Shepherd init system
The above 2 are written in and configurable with Guile: GNU's implementation of Scheme.
It can also be as minimal or as big as you wish by editing the configuration file in Scheme.
The system includes 3 defaults for this. One is the typical "minimal install", one gives you XFCE and GNOME, and one gives you small WMs like ratpoison.

Monitor Stand Solutions

I currently have my monitor sitting on a box, because it's too low on my desk, otherwise. I'm getting a second monitor and can't afford to lose more desk real estate with a second box. I have a PS2 slim, Wii, Xbox 360, and a PS4 with a PS3 stacked on top of it. Along with an audio interface box, an 5 or 6 to 1 HDMI splitter, and a K95 keyboard. I basically have a lot of stuff on my desk.

I don't know what pic related is called. But I've seen tonnes of these before. They're like little raised platforms you can stick on your desk to raise monitors with non height adjustable stands. That's option #1. Option #2 would be to get monitor arms that camp to my desk. That would free up the most space, but would cost the most and I don't like the idea of having my monitors bolted to wobbly/mobile arms that you might have to readjust if you bump your desk.

How do you guys have your monitors situated? Does anyone know what those raised desk self/platform things are called?

The /g/ternet Project

Thread no: 63526080 - Thread date: 11/23/17(Thu)21:12:13. Replies: 326. Number of images: 27

Due to sparked interest from the last discussion thread promoting the creation of your own ISP, a thought-experiment of what would happen if a mesh network was established by anons has reached a point of plausability.

Anons in densely populated areas (in the proximity of 5km or less from one another) can create a WANET (Wireless Ad Hoc Network) which uses devices in order to create a peer-2-peer data exchange service. As this service is typically not connected to the internet and instead uses alternate methods of connection (hotspots, routers, etc.) it would make a re-creation of a normalfag free internet plausible.
Dubbed the "/g/ternet", this service would work as such: let's suppose an anon in Toronto would like to send another anon in New York or Ottawa a shitpost. Both anons are too far from one another to hotspot or route to one another directly. Instead, other anons in the vicinity will act like relay nodes and strengthen the signal on it's path to the anon in New York every few kilometers. This is highly plausible and is essentially how Ham Radio Internet systems function.
While inefficient, this system would be quite interesting to establish and create and once a simple framework or backbone has been established, who knows what'll stem from it. A node can be as simple as a Raspberry Pi or as complex as a radio-relay tower. The specifics of the project have not been worked out yet.
This is the final end-goal:
Pic related, however, cut out the internet for a fully closed system creating an alternate net.

This is a continuation of the brainstorming in the last thread, anybody interested is welcome to post any ideas or criticisms that they have.

AIM is Dying

Thread no: 63529411 - Thread date: 11/24/17(Fri)02:26:27. Replies: 3. Number of images: 0

From The Verge:

AIM was one of the first and most successful instant messengers, widely used in the late ‘90s and even throughout the 2000s. I was still using AIM to chat with my friends throughout college at the end of the decade, including to stay in touch with my (not-yet) significant other while she was studying abroad.

But with the proliferation of smartphones, everything has changed. Text messaging has taken over for desktop instant messaging apps, and increasingly, we’re seeing other social apps, like Snapchat and Instagram, take over for those in certain ways. For straight messaging, Facebook also makes things much easier, since you’re already connected to everyone you know and can just start up a chat without exchanging arcane things like screen names. In fact, Facebook has multiple billion-user messaging services at this point, Messenger and WhatsApp.

Other classic chat apps have shut down in recent years, too. MSN Messenger shut down in 2014, and Yahoo Messenger shut down last year (although Yahoo also launched a new messaging service under the same name). It was only a matter of time until AIM joined them, but there’s still some nostalgia in seeing it go.

With AIM on its way out the door, now’s your last chance to write that perfect away message.

If your CPU falls in this criteria you should be worried, you have an Intel backdoor with shit security that has ALREADY been exploited and many machines were affected
All your debotneting efforts are pointless if you are using the CPUs above
So either use ME neutralizer or change your CPU.

My 10-year-old Toshiba laptop is finally dying so I figure this would be a great time to get a new computer.I will start studying systems engineering next year and I'm trying to choose between an All-In-One a Laptop or a Desktop but I'm not sure which one would be the best for my needs. First of all, I would prefer something portable. I'm not that much of a Gaming or Graphicsfag but I would like to play modern games like Resident Evil 7 or GTA V every now and then no matter the settings.
Which one would you recommend me?

MacOS sucks black balls

I own both in pic related, one with the default MacOS High Sierra, one with Ubuntu 16.04.

High Sierra is a literally unusable piece of shit, that makes even the more simple operations counterintuitive or mouse-based. Also the retarded keyboard layout of the Mac makes it impossible to use it without looking at the keyboard, and that's not even considering the useless touchbar that they force you to use.

The only good things about MacOS are a good trackpad usability (the gestures are impeccable and super useful) and the system-wide password manager, but all the rest pales with respect to Ubuntu and it's vastly superior user experience (and that's saying A LOT! because Linux is still heavily flawed).

Not even once

>GTX 1080Ti if you're looking for very high (100+) framerates and you have a CPU and monitor to match
