Why do we need UTF-8? Why wasn't ASCII enough? Did it just introduce needless complexity?

We are a Windows only /MS only company so I don't really get it where this Chrome fever started, we were only using IE and VS (and related tools) for browsing and development. What can I do to show them that using Chrome is a bad idea for a corporation?

Gaming cafe

Thread no: 64817722 - Thread date: 02/21/18(Wed)08:36:25. Replies: 6.
Number of images: 0. Posted by: Anonymous.
Image renamed filename: https://i.4cdn.org/g/1519220185455.jpg.

I want to open a gaming cafe in my town. Few basics first, its a relatively small city with around 100k people. And there are already 3 other gaming cafes working pretty nicely.

Now I do know that it is a very large investment and the ROI is pretty slow, with 3 other competitors it is questionable if one small source of earnings will be enough.

So what I thought is to make a sort of community, along with having a regular gaming cafe I would also have a separate space for streamers and teams. I would sponsor these streamers and teams, I would also have them make guides, reviews and similar, possibly attracting sponsors (already have a few local ones interested).

And on top of that, I would also organize different events, competitions and such.

There are enough people interested in doing everything I've mentioned.

So assuming that having people or money for any tasks isn't an issue, what are the things I could add to my gaming cafe/community?

Of course I have to make a profit in the long run, but any suggestions and ideas are welcomed.

Inventions that will replace the need to work:

1) 3D Printers that can 3D print:
-Biotic materials (food, medicine)
-Durable/electronic materials (buildings, solar panels, circuitry)

2) Decentralized communications (to share open source designs)

3) AI that can design all of the above automatically

If we achieve that, then pretty much we can just sit in our houses all day and be pampered by our solar-powered AI robots that can fix every problem we will ever have, either automatically or with a voice command

>Why would I use openSUSE over the other distros?
-Built in snapshots(similar to Windows Restore Points) through Btrfs and Snapper
-YaST GUI configuration tools
-Automated package testing through OpenQA: https://openqa.opensuse.org/
-Proper KDE, Firefox integration
-Stable release with Leap, rolling with Tumbleweed
-service status page: https://status.opensuse.org/
-Find and install openSUSE packages through software.opensuse.org
-If software.opensuse.org is down, try: https://opensuse.pkgs.org/

>Can I have proper font rendering and codecs?
Yes, these are not included by default because licensing.
Try these:
Codecs:
http://opensuse-guide.org/codecs.php

Font rendering:
https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:gldickens3

>openSUSE is horribly bloated by default!
Yes, the default installation patterns install quite a few packages, try the Server(Text Mode) or Custom option during installation to specify installation patterns:
>>64729298

>64729321

>Why does openSUSE install all these dependencies I don't need?
The packagers determine dependencies, they've gone for features over slim.
You can turn that down.
After installation, open etc/zypp/zypp.conf and change:
solver.onlyRequires = true
solver.cleandepsOnRemove = true

>Can I use RX Vega with the opensource (AMDGPU) driver?
Yes but this does require using Tumbleweed and developer repositories to ensure the latest Mesa, Xorg, OpenGL and Wine version (and others), breaking some dependencies in the process.

sudo zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/forkbomb:/turboAMD/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/ turboAMD
sudo zypper ref
sudo zypper dup --from turboAMD
Switch to turboAMD packages and keep kwin packages (break dependencies)

Today we are going to do something a little different. Instead of recommending apps off the top of our heads, we are going to list every app on our phones so we can see what other /g/ users use on a relatively objective basis.

1) Install the List My Apps app (It's open source)

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.onyxbits.listmyapps&hl=en

https://f-droid.org/en/packages/de.onyxbits.listmyapps/

2) Start the app, select all, and copy the list to a post in this thread so we can see what apps you use. (even the embarrassing ones)

Let's do this.

I have xperia z1 compact, almost pristine, keeping it in comfy case since day 1, great battery life after 3 years of usage I don't feel any difference.
I think I have good habits of always closing apps turning off data wifi gps when I don't need them, that translates to minimal ram usage and battery drain.
I spend most of my "digital" time in front of pc so smartphone is used only for texting, some music on the go, navigation, not important photos (I take camera for important ones) or social media like 4chan when on toilet.
I do everything one handed with ease because of how small it is.
LineageOS 14.1 installed, smooth in every app I have.

Is there an app/program that lets you make checklists of things that you need to do with different frequencies?

For example:
Go for a run every 4 days
Finish a chapter of a book every week
do 15 push ups every day
eat 2 fruits every day
Clean the floor every week
Take a medicine every 3 days
Etc

I don't lack time but the things I want to do are so many and I often forget them or lose track of them. What I would like is an app that lets me organize them, gives me a preview of what's left to do for the day/week (possibly with some way of prioritizing the tasks that have less time left) and lets me check the tasks that I've completed.
I can't use alarms as my days/weeks aren't always the same and I don't know when I'll have time. I can't use standard to-do list apps as they don't let me specify a time after which each task should be renewed.

Also share your productivity and organization programs/methods

A friend of mine is having a rather nasty problem with somebody who wants to fuck him up by all means possible; his identity was thefted (his personal ID) and several loans were taken on his name, he got many phone calls and all sort of shit you can imagine.

Incidents were and are currently being reported to the police.

It just so happens that the attacker seems to be an capable tech guy, because he has gained access to his personal computer several times. I don't know the details.

The victim reinstalled windows several times, but found his PC infected again each time.

I told him to completely disregard Windows for the time being, so he installed Ubuntu.

But he saw his PC being remotely controlled via some remote desktop sort of shit. My idea is that, the attacker didn't use ssh or other more subtle techniques because he either wanted to creep the victim out or gain access to his Browser, so he could log into banks, facebooks and that sort of shit.

My question is, how do I completely fuck that attacker up?

I believe the first priority would be to set up a firewall after reinstalling ubuntu, to block all ports except 80 and 443; then install rkhunters, maybe ids and other security measurements

Then I would check all the possible attack vectors, like his phone, router, whatever I could see

But then, if I wanted to reveal more information about the attacker (who will hopefully be caught by police soon), how would I do that? Assuming that he is a capable specialist, so setting up some sort of honeypot would be insufficient to reveal his true IP address (which is probably hidden behind VPN and tor), so the only possibility I see is to do some smart social engineering and try to get the attacker to download an infected file.

I haven't got much of a clue about the ins and outs of laptop.

The main thing I want to do is to be able to transfer a load of photos I have from the hard drives onto my other laptop.

Can this be done easily with a reader like this
https://www.amazon.co.uk/AKORD®-Drive-Reader-Convertor-Adapter/dp/B00EQ7UEK4

Second is it worth me taking them apart and selling parts on eBay.

I'm thinking it may be worth it just so I have a little bit more knowledge on the different parts inside it.

But saying that I don't know what's really wrong with them.

The red one makes a big loud noise then switches its self off.
The screen is also nearly hanging off from it.

The grey ones also makes an extremely loud noise but the computer comes on but the keyboard is broken from I think spilling tea all over it.

The laptop models are compaq 6820s and a aspire 5742.

If I don't mess about trying to take them apart I'll just end up throwing them in the bin.

I installed ublock origin.. Then i needed a printer driver from HP support.com.. i followed the procedures and entered my OS and build etc... It said "sorry, we dont have that particular OS supported anymore."

I then went on firefox raw and downloaded the drivers no problem...

Why does this happen? Is ublock blocking too much? When i had that bloated piece of shit known as adblock plus it did not block necessary downloads like that.

Im sure its for a legit reason.. but HPSupport.com is not a reasonable site the should be blocked.

Is it just me or do these blockers block too much for the average geriatric, retarded end user?

Parents want a computer for their home. I'm making them a nice one. I would be stopping by occasionally and playing some light games and editing 4k video, so it needs to be higher end. Here's what I came up with:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KWJzKB

As for the Vega card, there's currently one on Amazon for $1000. I currently have a 1080 GTX, but am using a FreeSync monitor and would like to utilize it with Vega. So swapping my 1080 and running Vega might happen. How sketchy is it buying a used GPU? I'd assume it being on Amazon, the return policy would favor me, making the risk minimal.

Let me know if there's any glaring oversights. I personally am running Ryzen 7 1700. No particular reason for favoring Intel on this build, but I figured it'd get more raw power without any tweaks. I'd honestly be using this system primarily anyways.

4h left

Throw in one thing like trying to learn something or socializing aaand you have basically no time to do anything.

I didn't know where to post this so i came here.

So i started reading the book called Learning Python. From the start there are many examples that you kinda do along as you read. And from the start i ran into a problem. First cmd wouldn't start python. So i googled and did the Path thing and it worked. Now python starts, but if i add anything to it, it doesn't. For example Python HelloWorld.py. It says it can't locate it. If i just drag and drop the file itself in the cmd window right after typing python it works. And that kindof fixes the problem. But there is a new problem when i try to import things.

% python
>>> import myfile
>>> print(myfile.title)
The Meaning of Life

This is the example given. Inside myfile.py is just one like Title = 'The Meaning of Life'

So when i try to type in import myfile it sais "No module name 'mylife'. So the question is, where does python look for the module, and how do i change the directory he is looking at.

windows 8. My windows and python are on SSD, while i wanna keep all the practice things on my HDD.
